8 Secrets of Memorizing Things Easily

You have met the person before, but you cannot remember their name? You are constantly asking questions about a movie or a certain book in order to catch up… You lose the car in a parking lot often… Does any of these sound familiar? There is a reason why you cannot keep track of small details, but there is also a great way to learn how to memorize things easily.

How To Remember Everything

A German psychologist named Hermann Ebbingus did various experiments on memory and his work led to development of some quite reliable experimental methods for the quantitative measurement of memory. It was in the late 1870s when he decided to study human memory experimentally.

He created lost of nonsense words such as lef, bok, and taz and utilized them to assess pure learning. The term pure learning applies to learning free of meaning and the rate at people forget.  Ebbingus used meaningless material as he knew that learning new information is affected by the things we already know.

His experiments led to the creating of Forgetting Curve’, the rate at which we begin to forget new information. He found that large amount of the information he learned was forgotten within 20 minutes,  more than half of them was forgotten in an hour.  While two-thirds of the material learned was forgotten within a day, the repetition of it didn’t decline beyond that period.  In other words, if information manages to stay in your memory for a day, it will stay for long.

Additionally, he created yet another theory, The Spacing Effect. As he explains,  we learn things much better when we study if more than once,  spaced out over longer period versus learning within a short period of time.

The Spaced Repetition Technique

To remember everything, the two principles should be sort of combined.  Here is the solution-Spaced Repetition Technique.

To Memorize Quickly
  • 1st Repetition Right after learning
  • 2nd Repetition After 15-20 minutes
  • 3rd Repetition After 6-8 hours
  • 4th Repetition After 24 hours
To Memorize For A Long Time
  • 1st Repetition Right after learning
  • 2nd Repetition After 20-30 minutes
  • 3rd Repetition After 1 day
  • 4th Repetition After 2-3 weeks
  • 5th Repetition After 2-3 months
8 Secrets of Memorizing Things Easily
  1. Prioritize what has to be learned, so you can remember only the most important information.
  2. Consider that things at the very beginning and at the end are memorized the easiest, which is known as serial positioning effect.
  3. Comprehending the material you are learning makes it easier to remember.
  4. Opposites are much easier to remember. For instance, if you are learning foreign language remember the word for day and night forever.
  5. When learning a foreign language, associated words with the ones you already know.
  6. Switch topics as similar memories can get mixed together, which is known as interference theory
  7. Visualize and utilize body language when learning something new, as this triggers the muscle memory and enhance remembering.
  8. Use ‘nail’ words so that when you remember it, you remember the rest of the information.
