Justice has finally been served for a 4-year-old girl who was hurled off a cliff by her father in Palos Verdes, California 15 years ago.
On Friday, a Los Angeles court sentenced the 53-year-old Cameron Brown to prison for life without parole for throwing his daughter Lauren Sarene Key off the 120-foot seaside cliff.
According to media reports, emotions ran high in the courtroom, bringing the prosecutors to tears.
Brown had been estranged from his daughter and was in the middle of an enraged custody dispute with the girl’s mother at the time the murder occurred.
He initially told police that Lauren had fallen after running toward the cliff, but an expert called by the prosecution was able to prove that she couldn’t have run with enough speed to land as far out as she did on the rocks below.
Brown reportedly had wanted the girl’s mother, Sarah Key-Marer, to get an abortion after their short romance ended during her pregnancy. The prosecution said his key motives were hatred toward the mother, as well as unwillingness to pay $1,000 a month in child support.
Jurors heard a witness who quoted Brown as saying that it would be “nice to get rid of Lauren”. Another witness testified that the little girl did not trust her estranged father and actually feared for her life.
After the verdict was read, the mother said all she ever wanted “was that he would take responsibility for that day”. She left the courtroom in tears.
