Police have launched an investigation after a shop operator was caught on video abusing a girl for allegedly underpaying her by $40 for an item.
In the 30 second video, the female shop operator is seen holding the child while insistently asking for the money. At one point the shop owner slaps the child in the face and hurls an expletive at the girl who was dressed in her school uniform.
Residents are heard in the background laughing at the child who breaks down in tears.
Deputy Superintendent Dahlia Garrick, the officer in charge of communication at Corporate Communication Unit (CCU), told Loop News that the police are aware of the video and have launched a probe into the matter.
“It is something we are looking into at this time,” DSP Garrick said.
Police were however unable to say at the moment where in Jamaica the video was captured or when the incident occurred. It has been suggested that the incident took place in Clarkes Town Trelawny but Loop News was unable to confirm this up to the time of publication.
The case has triggered a firestorm on social media user, with scores of Jamaicans condemning the action of the business operator.
