AOL.COM REPORTS: “A Texas teenager, who ran into a church half-naked claiming that she was gang-raped by three black men, has been indicted on felony charges after admitting it was all a hoax. (VIDEO BELOW ARTICLE)
Breana Harmon, 19, was indicted on two third-degree felony accounts of tampering with physical evidence and a third-degree felony count of tampering with a government record.
Back in March, Harmon was found covered in blood and only wearing a shirt, bra, and underwear when she ran into a church in Denison, Texas, alleging that she had been raped by two black men while another held her down, KXII reported.
However, a medical examination did not find evidence that the teen had been sexually assaulted — cuts on her jeans that were discovered didn’t match those on her legs, the station reported.
Two weeks after the incident, the teen admitted to police that she lied about the attacks and that her injuries were self-inflicted.
Harmon said that “things from her past started going through her head” and that she “began cutting herself and her jeans,” according to the Herald Democrat. The teen said she made up the assaults so her mother wouldn’t know she cut herself.
She was indicted on felony charges earlier this week, after being initially hit with a misdemeanor in March. Each of the charges carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a maximum fine of $10,000, Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown told the outlet.
“The more we have looked at what happened in this case, and considered the harm it caused, and certainly could have caused, we believe what she did fits these higher charges,” Brown said in a statement, according to the newspaper. “What she did was very serious, and we believe it was felony conduct.”
