These 5 habits will make your life 10 times better (according to science)

You have probably ever contemplated on the habits which are considered the best for a healthy body and mind. While generally, any healthy habit is promoting, it doesn’t mean that everyone will benefit from it. We are all different and specific things work for us differently.

However, studies have listed the following 5 habits as the most beneficial ones, claimed to make your life 10 times better.

1. Running

Given that humans are built to run and that has evolved to do so gathering food, it` no wonder that running is one of the best and most beneficial habits for both physical and mental health.

According to a  2014 study that appeared in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology,  “running, even 5-10 minutes a day, at slow speeds, even slower than 6 miles per hour [10:00 minute pace], is associated with markedly reduced risks of death from all causes and cardiovascular disease.”

A recent study has found that runners are at 25 to 40 percent reduced the risk of premature mortality and live about three years longer than non-runners.

Note that it isn’t physical health that benefits from running only. It has been scientifically shown that running and similar forms of exercise help you relax and reduce anxiety symptoms. Various studies have even found that running is as effective as medication to alleviate anxiety.

According to Carl. J. Lavie, MD, “Running for 20 to 30 minutes, or about a mile-and-a-half to three miles, twice per week would appear to be perfect.”

2. Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting can be done in a few different ways, such as not eating for 24 hours a few times a week or not eat from 7 PM until 11 AM (16 hours).

A 2014 review has shown that intermittent fasting causes weight loss of 3 to 8 percent over 3 to 24 weeks. The participants lost lots of belly fat as well, which is detrimental to the abdominal cavity.

It has been scientifically confirmed that this type of fasting reduces inflammation and oxidative damage in the body while improving certain risk factors for heart disease, including triglycerides and cholesterol levels.

3. Weightlifting

Weightlifting is an extremely beneficial habit which is said to have the ability to add years to your life.  According to a 2014 UCLA study, “the greater your muscle mass, the lower your risk of death….Thus, rather than worrying about weight or body mass index, we should be trying to maximize and maintain muscle mass.”

Improved sleep is yet another benefit that comes from resistance training. A 2012 study has found that resistance training significantly reduced the number of times the participants woke up at night.

4. Stop Using Facebook

A recent study done in Denmark has shown that people who stopped using Facebook for a week felt happier and more satisfied with their life compared to the control group who kept using it.

“Facebook distorts our perception of reality and of what other people’s lives really look like. We take into account how we’re doing in life through comparisons to everyone else, and since most people only post positive things on Facebook, that gives us a very biased perception of reality…If we are constantly exposed to great news, we risk evaluating our own lives as less good,” the lead researcher explained.

5. Go Outside of Nature

Due to urbanization and technology, people are spending more and more time indoors. This means that we are rarely going outside in nature!

However, mounting evidence suggests that getting outside reduces stress levels and makes one happier. A Japanese study on the topic found that those who walked in a forest experienced less stress and increased relaxation compared to those who walked in an urban center.
