KINGSTON, Jamaica – The police last night arrested and charged an 18-year-old man who they say was found with an illegal firearm while travelling on a public passenger Coaster bus.
Two other firearms were also seized in St Catherine as the lawmen implement their ‘Get the Guns’ campaign.
Police were reportedly on operation along the Mandela Highway about 9:00 pm when they stopped the bus and searched the occupants.
During the search, a 9mm Pistol was found in the possession of the 18 year old.
His name is being withheld pending further investigations.
Then, about 10:30 pm, a team of police officers from Old Harbour followed leads to an abandoned building in Grove district in the parish where they found a homemade handgun. A further search of the area revealed a homemade shotgun, eleven 5.56 rounds and three 9mm rounds of ammunition. No one was arrested in connection with this seizure.
The police say 10 firearms and 53 assorted rounds of ammunition have been seized since the launch of its ‘Get the Guns’ campaign. They are encouraging members of the public to call Crime Stop at 311 or 811, police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station to report illegal weapons, wanted persons or suspicious individuals in their communities.
